Week 9
1. What did you learn this week?
We learned so much this week. First we started by looking at our fast plants. Our fast plant looks like it has died a lot more then the week before. We were able to collect the seeds from our plants. It was interesting to see that some of the plants only had a couple of seeds and some had 10 plus seeds. After that we shared the final results of the baby lab. It was interesting to see how everyones babies looked so different. It just goes to show how different the genotypes and phenotypes can change the look of someone. The last thing we learned was about mutations. We did a couple of simulations in class and then we also did a superhero worksheet. The superhero worksheet showed us how mutations can affect someones DNA makeup. We learned that there can be deletions, substitutions, and insertions into someones DNA makeup.
2. What parts did you find clear and which were confusing?
I found the simulations of mutation on the computer very confusing but I thought the superhero lab very easier to understand. I think actually applying the mutations and seeing the effects made it easier to understand. Next time I think it would have made more sense to do the worksheet first and then do the simulations.
3. How can you apply what you've learned to your teaching in the future?
I think both the fast growing plants lab and the superhero lab is something I would want to bring into my classroom. I thought it was so interesting to watch the progress of the fast growing plants thought the last couple of weeks. It was also interesting to see the seeds at the end. I also think the superhero lab was a great way to learn about different mutations and to see the effects. I think students would have a lot of fun doing it.

Hi Faith, I completely agree with you on the simulations being very confusing. I also would bring both of those activities to my future classroom but I would personally add more to the superhero lab because I felt I had a lot of unanswered questions.
ReplyDeleteHi Faith! I also learned a lot about the various ways that DNA can be changed to ultimately change the whole entire DNA makeup of a person. It was fun to do the simulations on the computer, but I definitely agree that the superhero worksheet was a little difficult to understand. I agree that there are various fun activities that we did throughout the lab that would be fun and engaging for students to try! Great post this week!
