Week 2

1. What did you learn this week?

During this lab I learned all about NGSS. I learned how to navigate the site and find all of the science standards that we will be using throughout the semester. I learned that on the NGSS website I can search for specific standards or I can find different ones by using the grade, practice, crosscutting content and disciplinary core ideas. This will give you a better result to finding standards that match your lessons. We also learned about the seven categories of crosscutting. After learning about NGSS, we started learning about living things. We learned about the eight core characteristic of living things.

The 8 core characteristics for living things include,

            - Growth and change

            - Responds to stimuli

            - Cellular composition

            - Genetics and heredity

            - Maintains Homeostasis

            - Movement

            - Metabolism

            - Reproduction

The 7 categories for crosscutting include,

            - Patterns

            - Cause and effect

            - Scale

            - Systems

            - Energy and matter

            - Structure and function

            - Stability and change

2. How can you apply what you've learned to your teaching in the future?

I think what we learned today will be very helpful for us as future educators because over 25 states have started using NGSS as a standard for the science education. This is good for us to learn now because we will be matching out lessons to it later on. This lesson is also really good for any age children because they know what living things are. I think if I were to apply this to elementary school kids we could find different things that are living and that are not. We can also use comparing a contrasting to talk about how they are alive and not.

3. What are new or remaining questions?

I think the only question that I have after learning about NGSS is why more states are not using these standards for science. I think this is a great way for students to learn and grow as learners all around. I think that if more schools started using this program more students would understand and want to learn about science.

Comments

  1. Hi Faith! I totally agree that it is important for us to be learning about the NGSS because so many states us them for science instruction. I like how you said that you could use comparing and contrasting to go along with this activity like we did with goldfish and goldfish crackers. Great post!

  2. Faith,
I agree that it is odd why more states are not adapting NGSS. I think this style of learning is a lot more interactive for students, which will help them retain more from the lesson. This has been proven with other subjects, so I think if we were able to spread NGSS more nationally it would be beneficial in the long run for students.
