Week 5

 1. What did you learn this week? 

This week we learned about biomes and habitats. We learned about different animals, their environments, and what they like to eat. A biome is a large area that have similar climate and similar dominant types of plants and animals. A habitat is a specific place where a particular community of organisms live. Lastly an ecosystem is a community of living and non living things that interact with each other in an environment. For learned about the differences of a food chain and a food web. A food chain follows on path of how energy and matters moves through an ecosystem. Where as, a food web shows many different relationships between each level of the food chain. In a food chain we learned that you can only move trophic levels by 10%. 


2. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?

I already know about food webs and food chains but I had never put one together for different biomes. My group made a food chain for a tundra and it was interesting to see the way it started to where it ended. I also didn't know about the trophic levels going up by 10% every times. So I feel like I can now apply that to my food chain next time. 


2. How can you apply what you've learned to your teaching in the future?

I think it is important to teach children about the difference between a food chain and a food web. I want to bring different animals into lessons to talk about their food chains. I think not only can you show the differences in biomes when doing that but you can also learn about animals you didn't know about before. We could make a food chain and food web for a lot of the animals that we talk about.

    I think it is almost important to also show the difference between a web and a chain! I didn't realize that this was such a difference but I think that this is important to know!!

    Hi Faith! I agree that kids should know the difference between a food chain and a food web. I think using a poster or some type of hands on activities would be a good way to demonstrate the differences between the 2.

  1. What did you learn this week? This week in lab we learned so much. To begin we pollinated our plants using bees. I did not know that you can pollinate plants by just rubbing them with dead bees. I did not know that you can pollinate plants by rubbing them with dead bees. We also learned about the game called turtle, turtle watch out. This game taught us many different nature and human causes and effects on the turtle population. In this game we used fortune tellers and whichever one we landed on we either had to stay standing or sit depending on what happened to the turtle.  1. What did you learn this week? We learned so much this week. First we started by looking at our fast plants. Our fast plant looks like it has died a lot more then the week before. We were able to collect the seeds from our plants. It was interesting to see that some of the plants only had a couple of seeds and some had 10 plus seeds. After that we shared the final results of the baby lab. It was interesting to see how everyones babies looked so different. It just goes to show how different the genotypes and phenotypes can change the look of someone. The last thing we learned was about mutations. We did a couple of simulations in class and then we also did a superhero worksheet. The superhero worksheet showed us how mutations can affect someones DNA makeup. We learned that there can be deletions, substitutions, and insertions into someones DNA makeup.  2. What parts did you find clear and which were confusing?  1. What did you learn this week?  This week we learned so much. First we started by looking at our fast growing plants. Ours looked great. The bottom looks to be dying a little bit but we have lots of seeds growing at the top. There is also more flowers blooming. Then we started learning about DNA and the make up of it. We learned that adenine has to be paired with thyine. Guanine has to be paired with cytosine in a DNA strand. To learn this we made DNA strands out of candy using twirlers, dots, and toothpicks. This helped us see how each pair had to be formed together. The next thing we learned was about genes. For this activity my partner and I had to flip a coin to determine how each gene looked. For example, one of the categories was face shape. The mother got a R gene and the father had a R gene as well which meant that the genotype of RR and the phenotype was that the child had a round face.
