Week 16

What did you learn this week?

We finished our final week of lab talking about our last phenomenon, where do the bubbles come from when we mix vinegar and baking soda. To look at this question we did the experiment of mixing baking soda and vinegar. My group choose to do this experiment two different ways. The first way we did it was we put vinegar in and empty bottle and then baking soda in a ballon. We put the ballon on the water bottle and lifted it up so the baking soda would go into the bottle. The ballon started to fill up with air as the two substances mixed together. We measured the everything together before and after the chemicals mixed and noticed that we had loss mass when it should have stayed the same. So we decided to do it again but without the ballon and instead using the cap of the water bottle to make sure the bottle was sealed up all the way. We did this experiment three times before the weight came out to be the same.

How can you apply what you’ve learned to your teaching in the future?

I think this would be a great experiment to do with my students in the classroom but I think it would be more fun to talk about why the mass stays the same. I think if I were to do this in my classroom I would show them the ballon experiment first and show them that the mass changed but we want it to stay the same. I would ask them why they thought we lost mass and how we can do this experiment again and try to not loss any. Then we would do the experiment again but using the cap.

What remaining questions do you still have?

I still am not 100% on where the bubbles come from. Do they come from the two substance mixing together to create a new substance?
